On New Year’s Eve and throughout the first few weeks of January, our “Spiritual Sun,” the fixed star Sirius, will shine overhead at midnight throughout the world. Sirius is the “Sun Behind our Sun,” the brightest star in the night sky, and a local source of spiritual energy for our planetary system.

Known as the Dog Star, Sirius is symbolized as the canine companion of Orion the Hunter. In the image below, you can see Procyon in Canis Minor (Alpha Canis Minoris); Sirius in Canis Major (Alpha Canis Majoris); and Betelguese in the left shoulder of Orion. These stars make up the Winter Triangle. (Thanks to Astro Bob for this image.)
Sirius is really a binary star that consists of two distinct celestial bodies. Some even speculate that it is actually three stars (a tertiary star). Sirius is only 8.6 light years away and a few times larger than our Sun.

The bright star at top center is Alhena, which forms a cross-shaped asterism with the Winter Triangle. This Sirius-midnight alignment occurs around the time of perihelion, when the Earth and the Sun come closer together than at any other period in the year. The exact perihelion occurs every year in early January. This year, perihelion will take place on January 4, but it is coming into range now.
At perihelion, Sirius (which lies at 20 degrees of sidereal Gemini) is in opposition to the Sun in Sagittarius (at 20 degrees). In early July at aphelion, when the Sun and Earth are farthest apart, Sirius is conjoined the Sun in Gemini. Both of these periods are considered to be powerful Sirius activation portals.
During either of these Sirius alignments, we should tune in and infuse ourselves with the cosmic light stream being emitted through the Sirius portal. Astrologer M. Temple Richmond described Sirius as “a vast cosmic heart center aligned with universal and cosmic principles such as karma and periodicity.” The high-frequency energy coming through at this time can awaken a broader perspective; strengthen intuition; activate creativity; and recharge our bodies, minds, and spirits.
It seems like an amazing synchronicity that we always celebrate the civil New Year when our Earth is closest to the Sun and both celestial bodies are directly aligned with Sirius. We also celebrate New Year’s Eve at midnight when Sirius is beaming down on us.
It was actually Julius Caesar who instituted January 1 as the first day of the year. This was partly to honor the month's namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future.
I have often wondered if Caesar was also privy to the esoteric knowledge of the Sirius stargate when he chose this date for the new year. I do know that January 1 is somehow tied to the Sothic cycle and the heliacal rising of Sirius in the ancient Egyptian calendar, though more than that is beyond my knowledge.
During the midnight Sirius activation, the sublime stellar light of this powerful star reboots itself and streams down to realign with higher consciousness through the upper chakras and the pineal and pituitary glands. This activation can help us remember who we really are as spiritual beings having a human experience. Tuning into Sirius at midnight helps establish a perfect beginning for the new year! Many of us will be meditating at this time to reinforce the power of this cosmic energy.
You should also keep in mind that Sirius represents the principle of sovereignty as a significant element of the Divine Plan for life on Earth. Beyond all creed and dogma, the highest sovereignty is the essence of our soul, which is ultimately pure, eternal, birthless, deathless, fearless, and changeless. This is the utmost sovereignty. May it ring true for all beings everywhere in the new year.
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.Ring out the grief that saps the mind
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be. (In Memoriam, [Ring out, wild bells]: Alfred, Lord Tennyson)
Thank you for the look ahead! and the prayer / song. I like very much.
WOW!
