Mercury Returns from the Underworld Bearing Gifts

Omens, Signs, and Synchronicity!

The Moon has been transiting in Mercury's sign of sidereal Gemini since May 31, and this will continue through early tomorrow, June 3 (in N. and S. America, Europe, and Africa), and later in the afternoon and evening of June 3 in Asia and Australia/NZ. You may recall from my previous articles that Mercury will also be stationing direct in the same period.

When the Moon (manas or feeling mind) transits in Mercury's constellations (Gemini or Virgo), we can really benefit from paying attention to omens, signs, and synchronicity, which are messages from Divine Spirit. This is because Mercury/Hermes rules over such matters.

It is also true that we should pay attention to these things when Mercury is retrograde; when He stations direct after having been retrograde (since May 10 in this instance); and for a few weeks afterward (in this case until June 18 during Mercury’s post-retrograde shadow cycle).  As He is returns from his sojourn in the underworld (retrograde), Mercury indeed has important messages to share.

One of my favorite books, which I have shared about on my blog before, is Sidewalk Oracles: Playing with Signs, Symbols, and Synchronicity in Everyday Life by Robert Moss:

In Game #4 on pp 104-108 of Sidewalk Oracles, Moss discusses listening for your daily kledon, which is a Greek word referring to the first sounds you hear from silence. Moss explains that monitoring kledons was a favorite form of divination in the ancient world.

For instance, Moss explains, in the Peloponnese at Pharai, if one were seeking guidance, he or she went before the statue of Hermes in the marketplace, asked for guidance, then covered his or her ears until returning to the outer gates. Once on the perimeter, ears were uncovered, and the first sounds that came would carry the Divine Messenger's answer.

Moss shares game rules for catching your daily kledon:

Be alert as you go about your world, for the first sounds that come out of silence or out of the shapeless noise of a city street...and...when you are in a group, there is a variant of this game...when you are in a company that falls silent, the first sound or speech to come out of that silence may be more than a kledon. It could be a hermaion, the direct intercession of Hermes [Mercury]...who loves to intervene through seemingly natural events and everyday phenomenon.

Synchronicities are often received as messages, but sometimes they are beyond words and ideas, as when time seems to stand still and the Universe reaches out to bless us with Divine Presence, like a “wink from God.” Quite often they are both of these at the same time.

I had this experience just this morning while harvesting fragrant New Mexico Beardtongue (Penstemon) wildflowers, which I am using to make a flower essence. This essence opens the soul to reservoirs of power that can help access deeper levels of unconditional courage, joy, and resilience, no matter how harsh and adverse the outer conditions of life may be.

As I was cutting the flowers in a field near the roadway, I became very aware of the high-pitched humming sound of cicadas in the background. I always find this amazing “sound of summer” to be very soothing, akin to the potent healing vibrations of a purring cat, or to the OM/AUM sound which I have heard in meditation. Not surprisingly, the cicada sound vibrates in the 6 Hz spectrum which is very balancing for the brain.

The cicada symphony became so loud that the world stopped for me for a moment, and I paused to tune in. I wondered, what was the message here? I began to sense that the flower essence I am crafting will transmit not only the flowers’ gifts, but also the gift of these cicada sound frequencies. Were they mating sounds? Possibly, and if so, this would impart the expansive creative force of nature as we move closer to the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere.

The cicada song felt rejuvenating and energizing, and then I knew that these sound frequencies were being downloaded into the flowers at that moment for my flower essence, and that part of its healing power would be to balance the brain as well as to revitalize and enhance creative energy. Later, while I soaked the flowers in a spring- water bath on my deck under the blazing sun, the cicadas continued to sing in the background, channeling more of their sound waves into the process.

Omens, signs, and synchronicity are meant to guide us in an important matter; to let us know we are on the right path or that perhaps we need to move in another direction; to provide reassurance that there is a great natural order of which we are an integral part; and to make sure we can feel the love and support of the Divine power in us and all around us. It really true that when we stop and truly listen, the Universe will be there waiting for us. And this is what Robert Moss describes as “a way of real magic.”
