We are about to experience a very special lunar event! The Full Thunder Moon will occur on Sunday, July 21, at 6:17 AM EDT (10:17 AM UTC). Use the World Time Buddy to find the exact time if your location is different.
This month’s Full Moon will be even more auspicious than usual because it will coincide with Guru Purnima. This is the extremely auspicious and holy lunar day that is celebrated in the Vedic tradition every year in the Ashadha month (which extends this year from July 5 to August 4).
Let's talk about what that very special Full Moon could mean for you.
Full Moons Heighten Sensitivity and Activate Spiritual Energy
For several days leading up to a Full Moon, during a Full Moon, and for a few days afterward, the lunar energies intensify and cause some to feel more sensitive. This lunar effect is often associated with high tides, stormy weather, heavy rains, floods, seismic eruptions, intense emotions, chaotic events, and erratic behaviors. Inner practices such as meditation, prayer, and mindfulness can help us feel more balanced, calm, and stable during these times.
During the day and night before any Full Moon, maximum light will pour forth onto the Earth. This light comes from our Sun, which is itself a reflection of the highest divine light that shines forth from the Divinity. This is why all our Full Moons are some of the best times of the month for meditation, healing, and spiritual practices.
Full Moon in Capricorn and Uttarashadha Nakshatra: A Time to Pause and Enjoy Our Blessings and Achievements
This month's Full Moon will occur at five degrees of Capricorn. This mysterious and magical sign exemplifies the highest manifestation of Spirit within matter. The Full Moon will occupy Uttarashadha nakshatra, a very lucky asterism within Capricorn which represents unchallengable victory.
Known as the “Universal Star,” Uttarashadha is ruled by a group of collective heavenly beings known as the Visvedevas (or Vishwadevas). They oversee dharma and symbolize spiritual illumination and the power to help us focus on and fulfill our highest purpose.
The Full Moon will additionally be in Aquarius navamsa, the sign of the “waters of life poured forth for thirsty humanity.” This suggests a wonderful time to pause and enjoy our blessings and achievements. At the same time, the power of Uttarashadha nakshatra is to grant “unchallengable victory,” so this Full Moon will be a very good time to affirm our deepest dreams and best intentions.

The Thunder Moon: Potent Lunar Energy
Native traditions named the July Full Moon the Thunder Moon. This lunar event is said to bring summer thunderstorms. Thunder also depicts how this lunation’s intense power must be respected and carefully harnessed. Another name for the July Full Moon is the Buck Moon, to signify the new antlers that emerge on the foreheads of deer bucks around this time. Their antlers are a spiritual symbol of new growth, expansion, strength, and determination.
This symbolism is even more compelling because Pluto, the planet that governs power and rebirth, will conjoin the Full Moon. Pluto’s influence may further indicate intense emotions arising around this time, and perhaps the need to strengthen our boundaries to avoid being hijacked by encounters with the negative power, which is very strong in the world at this time.
Guru Purnima: A Day to Honor the Guiding Light in Our Lives
Guru Purnima will be celebrated around the world this year on July 21. The night before Guru Purnima is the most powerful time for Full Moon practices and prayers. You can find the exact timings for your location on Drik Panchang.
Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima. It has this name because it marks the birthday of Veda Vyasa, the sage who authored the Mahabharata and compiled the Vedas. Guru Purnima is one of the best times of the year to begin a new spiritual or educational practice, to honor and propitiate our preceptors, and to commune with the Divine Teacher who exists within us and within all of nature.

Guru Purnima is a time when we can more easily access the Divine Light within. We can access this light through our teachers and guides and in all forms and areas of life. It is customary and considered a great honor and blessing in Vedic tradition to offer alms to the needy on Guru Purnima. This is called annadanam. Many will also sponsor spiritual pujas at this time which also offer food and donate money for food to be distributed to the needy.

The Moon shines by reflecting the dazzling light of the Sun. It is the Full Moon of Purnima Day that reflects in full splendor the glorious light of the Sun. The silent all-enduring earth with its lofty forbearance, the shady fruit-bearing tree with its willing self-sacrifice, the mighty Banyan tree (Pipal) reposing with patience in the tiny seed, the dripping drops whose persistence wears away the rocks, the planets and the seasons with their orderly punctuality and regularity are divine Gurus to him who will look, listen, and receive. (Swami Sivananda)
This month’s Full Moon is really something to look forward to and to make use of, both in our spiritual practices and our efforts in the world. May it be a peaceful and fruitful time for all beings everywhere. Love and light, and happy Guru Purnima and Full Moon!
