Who’s ready for some extra lunar energy? For the first time since 2023, we are going to have two Full Moons in one month!
When this happens, the second Full Moon is called a Blue Moon. This extra-special Blue Moon will arrive on Sunday, May 31.
There’s something so joyful and magical about experiencing two Full Moons in a single month. The very name “Blue Moon” carries a sense of mystery, rarity, and special cosmic blessing.
And this isn’t just any Full Moon—the May 31 Blue Moon has several unique features that make it especially potent.
A Blue Moon Packed With Transformational Energy
The second Full Moon of May will occur on May 31 at 4:45 AM EDT (8:45 AM UTC). It will occupy 15 degrees and 42 minutes of sidereal Scorpio, in the deep feeling and devotional Anuradha nakshatra.
The Full Moon will conjoin the fixed star Antares, in the Heart of the Scorpion. In its higher expression, the Antares-Full Moon alignment invites serious soul-searching, expansion, and meaningful change. It can also be beneficial for business and domestic matters.
Antares translates as the “Rival of Mars." When this star is acting in its lower expression, it can embody some of the less positive indications of Mars. In this case, Mars in Aries and the Moon in Scorpio will form a challenging quincunx aspect (6/8 or shasta-ashtakam).
The Mars-Moon quincunx suggests the potential for illness, accidents, emotional strain, mood swings, erratic behavior, impulsivity, and just generally some restless energy around this Full Moon. You should not rush into making a significant decision in the days around this Full Moon. Instead, it is a time to exercise restraint in all matters. Furthermore, quincunx energy often asks us to make an important adjustment, so remain as mindful and flexible as you can.
The Sun will conjoin the fixed star Aldebaran in opposition to the Full Moon. Though this conjunction of the Sun and Aldebaran is in place every year during the last few days of May and into the first few days of June, it it is rare for it to occur within the heightened energetic period of the Full Moon (when the Sun and Moon oppose each other).
The Sun conjunct Aldebaran generally creates favorable consequences in scientific, financial, technological, and business matters. On a personal level, it can enhance our mental prowess and help us to see things from a higher point of view, as Aldebaran is known as the “Eye of God,” and also the “Eye of Illumination.”
What Is a Blue Moon?
When two Full Moons fall in the same civil month, the second is known as a Blue Moon. (It won’t actually appear blue—the name is simply an old idiom for something that happens rarely.)
It’s relatively uncommon to have two Full Moons in one calendar month. The last one was in August 2023, so this is definitely a special occurrence.
There is another type of Blue Moon, which is known as a seasonal Blue Moon. This one occurs when there are four Full Moons in a single season (spring, summer, fall and winter), instead of the usual three. A seasonal Blue Moon occurred in August 2024.
Why This Full Moon Might Feel Even More Intense
In addition to being a Blue Moon, the May 31st lunation will also be Micromoon. A Micromoon happens when the Full Moon occurs near apogee—the farthest point from Earth along the orbit of the Moon. This Full Moon will be the most distant one of the year. It will appear 12-14% smaller and about 30% dimmer than average.
Western Astrology has named the lunar apogee point the Black Moon (and sometimes the Black Moon Lilith). It is void point in space that represents our psychological shadow — our unfulfilled passions, needs, and desires, unresolved problems and conflicts, and imbalanced behaviors that keep us feeling stuck.
The Black Moon will occur about eight degrees past the Full Moon. The two are thus within an effective orb of influence, and both will occur in Scorpio (Full Moon in Anuradha and the apogee point in Jyestha). These placements reveal powerful themes of intimacy, emotional truth, and metamorphosis.
Additionally, as the Moon moves more slowly than usual at apogee, we can sometimes see unusual weather patterns, surprising events, but also a sense of melancholy or ennui around this period.
Lessons from Past Blue Moons
Blue Moons feel like special moments, bringing rare opportunities, emotional highs, and big shifts that we remember long afterward. Let's look at some past Blue Moons to see how this pattern has played out in recent history:
The August 19, 2024 seasonal Blue Moon (the third of four Full Moons that summer) was also a Supermoon. It boosted feelings of letting go, being seen, and attracting abundance for a lot of people.
The August 31, 2023 monthly Blue Moon (another Supermoon) brought fresh energy and lucky breaks after tough times.
Other Blue Moons, like the ones on October 31, 2020 and March 31, 2018, were often tied to deep personal insights, major endings that made room for new beginnings, and that rare “once-in-a lifetime” feeling.
These past events remind us that Blue Moons act as gentle accelerators. They reward those who are prepared, make it easier to let go of things that no longer fit, and often deliver unexpected joy or breakthroughs when we flow with their lunar energy.

How to Work With This Blue Moon
To get the most out of the Blue Moon, keep it simple: focus on letting go of what’s holding you back, reflect on what matters, and set clear intentions for what you want next.
Release Ritual: Grab a piece of paper and write down the things you’re ready to let go of—old habits, grudges, fears, or anything that’s been weighing you down. Safely burn the paper (or tear it up and throw it away), then write down what you want to bring into your life instead (more peace, confidence, opportunities, fun, etc.)
Moon Time: Step outside for a few quiet minutes and look at the Moon. Think about what you want to release and what you want to grow. If you prefer staying in, take a calm bath and do the same reflection there.
Charge Your Items: Place crystals, water, flower essences you are creating, food items, or sacred objects in the moonlight to charge them. This Blue Moon is helpful for manifesting longer-term goals.
Gratitude and Nature Connection: Do something simple that you enjoy—take a walk in a forest or along a beach, or spend some time in your garden. Appreciate the small good things around you right now.
This Blue Moon is a great chance to pause, clear some mental clutter, and get intentional about the positive changes you want as the warmer days continue. Remember to keep it easy and real as small actions add up.

A Super Rare Lunar Event
To sum it all up: the May 31 Full Moon will occupy the passionate sign of sidereal Scorpio, and the deep-feeling and devotional Anuradha nakshatra; it will fall in the potent Antares-Aldebaran axis; it will be a Blue Moon (the second Full Moon in one month); and it will be a Micromoon (near apogee). All these layers together create a very special event filled with surprises, unusual energy, and expansive, joyous potential—with a bit of edginess we may have to navigate.
I hope that you are able to take in some Blue Moon magic this Sunday!
